What Is Base64 Encoding?

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents image data as ASCII text characters. It allows you to embed images directly in HTML, CSS, or JSON files without needing separate image files. The encoded string is roughly 33% larger than the original binary file.

When Should You Use Base64 Images?

Base64 encoding is ideal for small images like icons, logos, or favicons embedded directly in HTML or CSS to reduce HTTP requests. It's also useful for embedding images in JSON APIs, email templates, SVG data URIs, and single-file HTML demos. For large photos, regular image files are more efficient.

How to Use a Base64 Image in HTML?

Simply paste the Base64 string as the src attribute of an <img> tag: <img src="data:image/png;base64,...">. For CSS backgrounds, use background-image: url('data:image/png;base64,...'). The data URI prefix tells the browser how to interpret the encoded data.
